Supreme Audit Office at a Glance
Supreme Audit Office (SAO) is the highest audit authority of the country, established based on the article 61, section “Financial Affairs” of the Royal Constitution of Afghanistan named “Basic Organization of the Government of Afghanistan (nizamnamah-ye-tashkilat-e-asasiyah -e-Afghanistan)” enacted on 20 Hamal 1302 AH. The government official documents show that SAO exists for more than a century by different names. In 1398, according to the provisions of the new law of the Supreme Audit Office (SAO), signed and enforced through a legislative decree issued by the H.E President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the office was again renamed to the “Supreme Audit Office”.

The mission of Supreme Audit Office (SAO) is to ensure realization of government revenues and expenditures, protect public assets, ensure effectiveness, productivity, efficiency and economy of the government institutions, Identification of illegal activities and misconduct, especially in the field of public finance management of the government and state owned enterprises, responsible for the management of public assets.
